Note: I'm going to keep this honest because it doesn't help you or me if I sugar-coat it for you. I want 2025 to be the year that you grow,
1/ You only write to earn money
You've seen people like me talk about making a living writing, and that's the only reason you do it.
This is a recipe for unhappiness.
You see, at least in our Indian society, people have always picked professions like engineering because they were told this is the only way to a secure and high-paying career— a picture of a happy life.
Most of my writing students are engineers and aren't exactly happy with their jobs.
Do you see the pattern?
Happy engineers are those who are obsessive about fixing problems.
Happy and successful writers are obsessed with the art of writing. The best way to find this is to ask yourself if you're affected by stats, algorithms, and numbers. If you are, you are outcome-obsessed. Be process-obsessed instead. That will help you show up even if nothing works your way.
2/ You aren't good at writing
Yeah, and nobody will tell you that because it comes across as rude. I love giving feedback to my friends but they rarely ask me for it because I slice through their work.
Improve your writing.
Improve it by
- doing lots of writing
- editing well and cutting the fluff
- learning from others - content, videos, courses
The easiest way to get where you want to be is to learn from someone who is already doing it. It's great how the creator economy makes that possible!
3/ You are a part of cribbing communities
Listen... misery finds company.
Tell a group of people that the algorithm is rigged and they'll all agree how their stats have fallen because of it. Rarely would anyone take responsibility for their low-quality work.
Improve your craft, and I promise the rest will follow
4/ You aren't writing enough
The answer to
- what is my niche?
- how to write better?
- how to build an audience?
is a very unsexy one...
It is... WRITE.
There's no shortcut to getting better at a skill than practising it!
And of course, I can help some of you too 😉
See you next week!
Love,
N
