1/ Pick a Platform
Choose ONE platform. I know you’re busy with your job and/or other responsibilities so don’t stretch yourself too thin.
I’d recommend:
- LinkedIn: for building a personal brand and getting opportunities
- Substack: for writing long-form posts
The latter is also for those who want to be on Medium.
I’d say copy-paste your Substack posts and put them on Medium because Substack has a community factor, and engagement, and is what Twitter was in 2021 :)
Medium is good but not as a primary platform anymore.
2/ Create Consistently
90% of people don’t reach here, because it’s hard. It’s hard because
- growth is slow
- you don’t get likes
- you don’t know what to write about
Having systems in place will solve it.
Show up, don’t rely on inspiration. Make 2025 your year, and that doesn’t happen by doing what you’ve been doing all this while.
One way I created a system was by breaking down my writing process.
During my 9–5, I used to edit before work, outline my next article in the afternoon tea break and write after my workday was over.
Editing on an empty mind was a game-changer for me.
3/ Engage
It’s strenuous to grow when you don’t engage. It’s like talking in an empty room where nobody is listening to you.
Pick up 5–15 people and comment on their work.
Do this to
- gain visibility
- consume good content
- make new friends across the globe
Also, when you add value to others/ work it's an easy way to borrow an audience. If they like what you have to say, they will check out your profile.
4/ Stay
Again, most people won’t make it this far. You see
- the algorithm keeps changing
- what worked earlier might not work again
- you may see a dip in your engagement
- maybe people send you mean stuff
This is normal, yet most people walk out when they face these hurdles.
I mean, think about it. The internet is a dynamic place, you’ve seen it evolve over the years. It’s supposed to change and you can change parts of your writing with it.
But what will always remain constant is good storytelling. And that happens when you keep writing.
Stay.
Stay through it all.
