No, you don’t even need too much time.
30 minutes a day is just fine. Break it into two slots of 15 minutes if you need to. And here’s what you should do at that time.
Start with this
Get creating without overthinking about what to create. As a writer, I promise you that stuff like
- what to write about
- how often to write
- how to get ideas
- what will others say
are some of the biggest factors that hinder you from writing. However, the only way to answer these questions is when one keeps writing. Take consistent action instead of overthinking about what doesn’t matter.
Winners stick by this
Multi-millionaire creator Ankur Warikoo has a stellar routine of waking up at 4:30am and sleeping at 9 pm. Other big names also stick by having a routine because it gets things done more efficiently.
If you don’t carve out time to create, you’ll always wait for that ‘one day’.
Instead, fix a time. For instance, I used to edit before my job and write after work. This worked well for me.
The only way to grow
Is by having systems.
- How to not get overwhelmed writing?
- How to get new ideas to write about?
- How to scale my personal brand?
This happens when you have systems in place.
One of my systems is to sit for 60 minutes and schedule tweets for 8 days ahead on Hypefury. I’ve been doing this for over two years and it builds my personal brand without me actually being present.
And of course, scheduling is distraction-free compared to actually opening X and then getting distracted by scrolling.
Note down stuff
Trust me, and I say this as someone who didn’t follow this advice for the longest time — note down each time an idea strikes you. You may think you’ll remember it, it may look obvious, but you will forget it.
So many times I get an idea before I fall asleep and I won’t note it down because I don’t want to see my phone.
I always forget it.
Even when it feels too obvious to forget.
Note down your
- ideas
- fun conversations
- something cool you noticed
The evergreen strategy to generate ideas is to be observant and mindful.
Improve
None of the above will help you if you don’t
- see what works and dig deeper
- experiment with new things
- improve with feedback
I tell my students who are new to writing online to focus on writing their first 50 pieces of content before they worry about anything. Because that is a journey in itself and clarifies a lot of roadblocks that are probably holding you back right now.
Summarising
You need 30 minutes a day tops to build a new stream of income or a side hustle. Here’s what I recommended above:
- Start creating online.
- Carve this into your routine.
- Build systems that make this process easier for you.
- Note down stuff because you WILL forget it
- Improve as you go.
All the best!
Love,
N
