Hi friend,
People think making money online is harder now.
Actually, it's easier... because the roadmap is clearer than ever. When I started 5 years ago, we were still figuring things out. Many platforms that I use today weren't accessible to me back then.
So if I were to start again, here’s how I’d make my first $1000:
1. Pick a skill that saves time or makes money
Not a passion. A useful skill.
I also stay wary of passions because while it has worked well for me, the easiest way to fall out of love with your passion is by forcing it to be a profession.
So while it could work, it isn't for everyone.
Copywriting, editing, video editing, content writing, sales emails, website development, illustrations -> these get paid.
2 / Build a simple portfolio
My first portfolio was a bunch of articles on Medium.
Yours can be a Google Drive folder.
Proof beats polish.
3 / Make your services obvious
If nobody knows what you offer, nobody can hire you.
Put your offers in your Featured, About, and content on LinkedIn.
4 / Build in public
Talk about what you do.
I know it's scary. You'll think
- "There are better people than me."
- "There are better services than what I offer."
- "What if I talk about it and make $0 in sales?"
You're not doing it for sales... yet. You're doing it to build trust.
Most people don't do this, which is why they don't earn, silly.
Take help from the LinkedIn Growth Toolkit if you want :)
5/ Learn from those who are where you want to be
The easiest way to reach where you want to be is by learning from someone who's done it.
The internet makes this so accessible because
- they're putting out content
- some have books
- they're building in public too
- you can access their brains in their offerings
The ROI here is huge.
Take advantage of that.
Finally
I know it takes effort.
I know it isn't easy.
On some days, you may not want to build your portfolio. Even building your personal brand could be demotivating when your posts aren't floating in a sea of likes.
Stay at it.
That's the only thing that will distinguish you from the rest.
Love,
N
