SHS #225: What’s actually working on LinkedIn

Reading time: 5 minutes

Grow on LinkedIn

The FINAL cohort of Authentic Influence for 2026 starts in September 2026.

Hi friend,

People usually ask me,

"So, what's working on LinkedIn?"

I genuinely don't know how to answer this. Do you care about the algorithm? How to get more likes? How to be famous? How to get leads?

What does 'working' mean to you?

But I'll tell you something that always works.

In my Authentic Influence cohort, which primarily has mid-senior folks, I see there's a lot of unlearning to do.

The world has suddenly changed, and their world was so different.

They've been typing emails for decades. Then they hop onto LinkedIn and type out a chunky paragraph, and there aren't any views on it.

There's unlearning here.

But there's unlearning for YOU too, dear reader.

Truth is, only a tiny tiny % of you would apply it. And that's why only a fraction 'makes it'. And if you've read it this far, you're probably eager to get somewhere.

What's working, and has always worked, is:

  1. Bringing your own take: What do you think about something? Don't fall for the popular take or what's trending... give your take on things.

  2. Leverage your life to be original: your life is unique. So when you think "What can I do differently when XYZ topic is discussed to death?" -> Leverage your life. Nobody in the world has lived through your life experience, and those are all lovely stories.

  3. Be of service: if you think, "Why will anyone listen to what I have to say?" then help others. Be of service to them. Entertain, inspire, educate - help them reach their goals in some way. You don't have to be an expert. Moving up from step 1 to 4 is still growth. Talk about what you know and what you're obsessed with.

  4. Don't bother about algo: it keeps changing, and if you keep changing with it, you lose yourself.

  5. Engage with others: to publish without engaging is like talking in an empty room. Engage by adding valuable comments. Learn from others. Follow them. If you don't do this, why would anyone engage with you?

  6. Edit more: great writing requires cut-throat editing. Cut out 20% of your work - all the fluff, overexplaining, etc. Make it easy to read.

  7. Show up at a comfortable frequency: showing up 3x a week is great, but if you've never published, then show up once a week, then twice, and so on. But keep showing up.

  8. Do it for a long time: because even if you do all of the above, the needle may not move for a long, long time. This can be demotivating and make you second-guess everything. Often, people give up before the good stuff happens!

I hope this helps you

That's all. You got this. Just hold tight and enjoy the ride. It will all eventually make sense and be worth it.

All the best!

Love,
N
