“I need to wait to start a newsletter.”
The best time to start a newsletter was yesterday.
Substack is free.
Kit (formerly known as Convertkit) is insanely powerful right from hosting your lead magnet to email marketing. It’s also free till up to 10,000 subscribers, which wasn’t the case when I started there and had to pay a few hundred dollars for it.
You see, email is the only way you get to interact directly with your audience. Everywhere else you’re at the mercy of the algorithm.
Build one straight away, preferably with a freebie (lead magnet). This could be a simple checklist or a short ebook.
“I need more followers to monetise”
I have over 200,000 followers on LinkedIn and my friend has 25,000. For a year, he earns a consistent income through LinkedIn brand collaborations whereas I don’t.
Many people I know with a tiny following monetise it well.
In fact, I launched my cohort-based course Summit 21 as a complete beginner 4 months into quitting my job. I thought nobody would buy it so I was shocked when we sold out.
You don’t need more followers; you need the right audience.
And you build that by creating content that appeals to them.
“I need to be an expert.”
I’ll keep this short.
Growth isn’t always helping someone from step one to ten. Step three to five is still growth, and if you can do that, you’re good to go.
You don’t need to be an expert, you just need to be a few steps ahead.
“I need a fancy website and logo.”
You don’t need anything. Instead, create online and focus on building a personal brand because it
- makes you credible
- builds and audience
- speaks for you
- attracts opportunities
Most people overthink this part and never start.
“I need to go viral.”
It’s just a vanity metric. It doesn’t assure clients or money.
You can go viral repeatedly and not get clients. You can write for your niche for a few people and get clients who think you’ll be an investment.
I sometimes go viral and attract no clients. Other times, even a post with fewer likes and comments gets me a customer.
You also cannot game it. You don’t know what goes viral. So might as well focus on what is in your control, right?
I hope this encourages you to let go of so many assumptions that are clouding your mind, go out there, and get sh!t done. You got this!
See you next week.
Love,
N
